CHAPTER FIVE

Liam

Babysitting isn’t my favorite task, but since it’s Elena I’m watching over, I don’t mind so much. I often wondered over the years as we fantasized about making her ours, what it would be like when we finally had her here. It’s only been a day but, so far, she’s exceeded expectations. When she kicked Nic in the balls, that just about made my week. I’ve often felt like kneeing the arrogant bastard, but our code prohibits us from laying a hand on each other. We reserve our violence for outside of the group.

When the app on my phone alerts me to a presence at the front gate, I quickly check the cameras and see that the food I ordered has arrived. Marco, our resident chef, is out the with others tonight, handling an issue with one of our dealers. The idiot has had his hand in the cookie jar. How anyone expects to get away with stealing from us, I will never know.

Anyway, since my culinary skills are limited, I’ve had to resort to having dinner delivered. I hope Elena likes Chinese food. Perhaps I should have asked her, but she went upstairs after lunch to lie down and has been hiding out in her room ever since.

Grabbing my Glock from the closet in the hallway, I head to the gate to collect the food. It’s a pain in the ass having to walk all the way down there, but I don’t want a stranger coming up to the house, not while Elena’s in danger. If we’re going to keep her safe, we have to conceal her presence. Checking the safety’s on, I stick the gun in the back of my jeans and jog down to the gate. I recognize the delivery driver, a tall, skinny guy called Dean. His kid brother played football with Leo back in the day. That doesn’t mean I trust him, though. I quickly scan the area for potential threats, but see nothing to be concerned about.

“Hey, man, how’s it going?” I say, punching the code into my cellphone to open the gate as I approach.

“Good. Got your order here for you.”

He reels off a list of items from the label that’s stuck to one of several brown paper bags. Shit. I didn’t realize I ordered so much food. The guys will be hungry when they get home, so I guess they can have the leftovers.

“That’s great.” I grab the bags and hand him a fifty.

“Oh, no, Mr. Dempster, that’s not necessary. You already gave a generous tip when you ordered.”

Yeah, I added more to the standard amount to the bill before I paid on the app, but I don’t trust his employers not to skim something off the top. I wave off his attempts to refuse the money and he takes it. Of course he does. He’s not stupid enough to argue with a man like me, and he needs the cash. The gig economy is brutal and if I’m right, he has a pregnant girlfriend at home.
